Efficient Computing Lab
About The Lab
The Efficient Computing Lab is part of the facilities of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. At ECL, we conduct research at the intersection of distributed systems, cloud/edge computing, and machine learning, with the goal of optimizing the design and operation of computing infrastructures that support emerging classes of applications, particularly AI- and data-driven applications.
Our focus lies in improving the efficiency, adaptability, and trustworthiness of these systems. We develop methodologies, tools, and theoretical foundations that enable distributed computing platforms to deliver on demanding objectives such as:
- Performance and resource utilization (e.g., adaptive scheduling of workflows and AI tasks in cloud/edge environments)
- Cost-efficiency and energy-awareness (e.g., scheduling under pricing models and energy constraints, green computing strategies)
- Security and robustness (e.g., defending federated learning against model poisoning, ensuring secure aggregation)
- SLA adherence and service reliability (e.g., predictive SLA violation models, runtime adaptation techniques)
Our work often targets federated learning, workflow management, and big data processing frameworks, leveraging techniques from optimization, machine learning, and formal modeling.
Through our contributions to European research projects and open-source platforms, we aim to make large-scale computing systems more efficient, transparent, and resilient, laying the groundwork for the next generation of intelligent digital infrastructures.
